Understanding complex behavior, and how to support it

The Feeding Your Kids program is built on behavior science, and it is still being studied.

  • Complex behavior as a systemMoving beyond unit-based models of behavior change.
  • Personalization at scaleLatent competency areas and user patterns as a foundation.
  • AI-based supportIts role within digital behavior change programs.

Research focus

Eszter Erdélyi's research focuses on understanding how complex behaviors can be modeled, supported, and positively improved through personalized interventions, at scale. Her work seeks to extend beyond the traditional, unit-based behavior change models toward a more realistic systems-level approach to understanding behavioral processes and developing solutions that benefit everyone.

Her findings to date indicate that complex behaviors are underpinned by identifiable latent competency areas and user patterns, which could serve as a foundation for more effective personalization strategies in the future. A particularly promising avenue of research involves examining the role of AI-based support within digital behavior change programs.

The long-term objective of this research is to develop an expanded model of behavior change capable of interpreting both the functioning of complex behavioral systems and the role of artificial intelligence.

Eszter currently teaches the “Applied Behavior Science” course at Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
